Born in Osaka, Japan, Kanamé Onoyama graduated from the Keio University in Tokyo with a degree in French literature. Upon moving to France in 2004, he studied cinematography at the ESRA school of cinema in Paris, and trained for several years as a camera assistant on both commercials and narrative projects. Since becoming a cinematographer, he has shot a mix of feature films, documentaries, commercials, music videos, and artistic videos.

Kanamé’s iconic images have attracted numerous artists since the early stages of his career. “Grosse Fatigue”, directed by Camille Henrot, won the Silver Lion award at the Venice Biennale in 2013. Tessa Louise Salomé’s “Mr.X” was nominated for the World Cinema Documentary award at the 2014 Sundance Festival.

Kanamé’s work on international short and feature films has also earned him a spot in major festivals. Amin Sidi-Boumedine’s “Abou Leila” (co-produced by France and Algeria) was selected at the Critics’ Week of the 2019 Cannes Festival, while Gabriel Abrantes’ short film “Les Extraordinaires Mésaventures de la jeune fille de pierre” was selected at the Directors’ Fortnight of the festival.

Furthermore, Kanamé’s work within the music video industry has been awarded several times at prestigious award shows. Laurent Chanez’s video for Aufgang’s “Backstabbers” won Best Cinematography at the 2019 Berlin Music Video Awards 2019; Bouha Kazmi’s video from Indochine’s “Station 13” was nominated for Best Cinematography at the 2018 UK Music Video Awards and 2019 Camerimage; and Henry Scholfield’s video for Stormzy’s “Vossi Bop” won Best Video of the Year at the 2019 UK Music Video Awards.

Kanamé is trilingual, speaking fluent Japanese, French and English.
